Plantar fasciitis is a common condition characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, from the heel to the toes. This condition often causes heel pain, particularly with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest.

Symptoms:

  • Sharp or stabbing pain in the heel or along the arch of the foot.
  • Pain that is usually worse in the morning or after prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
  • Discomfort that may decrease as you move around but can return with prolonged activity.

Causes:

  • Overuse or excessive pressure on the foot, especially from activities like running or walking.
  • Poor footwear that lacks adequate support or cushioning.
  • Abnormal foot mechanics, such as flat feet or high arches.
  • Obesity or sudden weight gain, which increases stress on the plantar fascia.

Treatment:

  • Rest and avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain.
  • Ice application to reduce inflammation.
  • Stretching exercises for the calf muscles and plantar fascia to improve flexibility and reduce tension.
  • Using custom orthotic inserts or supportive footwear to provide better arch support and cushioning.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to manage pain and inflammation.
  • Cortisone injection therapy to alleviate inflammation of the plantar fascia.

In some cases, more advanced treatments such as physical therapy or shockwave therapy may be recommended if other conservative methods don’t provide relief. Surgical treatment options are also available after conservative treatment has been exhausted.
