Achilles tendinitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It’s a common injury, particularly among athletes who engage in activities involving repetitive stress on the tendon, such as running or jumping.

Symptoms:

  • Pain and stiffness along the tendon, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  • Swelling and tenderness around the heel.
  • Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest.
  • Thickening of the tendon.

Causes:

  • Overuse or repetitive stress from sports or physical activities.
  • Sudden increase in activity intensity or duration.
  • Poor footwear or inadequate arch support.
  • Tight calf muscles or improper stretching.

Treatment:

  • Rest and reducing activity to avoid aggravating the tendon.
  • Ice application to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to manage pain and inflammation.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf and Achilles tendon.
  • Gradual return to activity with proper warm-up and conditioning.

In more severe cases, especially if conservative treatments don’t help, medical intervention such as physical therapy or even surgical options might be necessary.
